It's Just an Apple
Her eyes cling to the ground
following his trail
as he wonders
why she complains
“It’s just an apple,” he says
and walks ahead, anyway
her gaze falls
to her own
an apple
too hard
for her jaw
heavy enough
to chain her ankles
she looks up
wonders
how his still stays red
while hers darkens in her hands
her eyes search him
for an eraser
for the book
breaking her spine
but he only carries
a pencil
the same one
that wrote
the weight
she drowns in
still
on all fours
she follows
wondering
if she will ever hold
a book
light enough
for her hands
or taste
an apple
that doesn’t hurt
