Isn'T There a Happy Holiday

~ Isn't There a Happy Holiday? ~

Labor Day was born in strife
Memorial Day means widowed wife
July Four ended a bloody revolution
MLK's death sparked violent retribution

   I'd vote for Thanksgiving
But given the country's current mood
   It seems that giving thanks
   For interracial cooperation
Is not viewed as something good

I suggest we create a Poet’s Holiday in August.

What an absolutely great idea!!!! Hope you're serious... Actually just looked it up, and there is a National Poet's Day in the UK, last one was Oct. 3, 2019. But zilch in the USA... Also, April has been National Poetry Month in the USA since 1996, so maybe April is the Target. Soup mail me if you want to discuss further. Thanks! Gershon

An honest interpretation of Holidays that brings to question. Excellent my friend, bringing me to a new view.

I can think of many. Meaning, those not of this world. Looking for happiness in man on earth, is the most temporal and meaningless. I think you know where to look for holidays with meaning.-)) Shalom Adonai, Panagiota MLKwas a man of great peace. The riots followed his passing. I was in Chicago and I clearly recall Daley's not putting up with it.Have a good say, a clever poem!

Actually, you're right, of course. I was just trying to think of a cheerful American holiday other than Christmas, which is about as 'American' a holiday as 'Hanukah;' i.e., it has zero to do with America...

time of the world is now in moonless darkness....holiday in the lap of gloomy sun....thanksgiving mind in faded glory.... after all poetic words searching for the evergreen springtime on the dancing juvenile waist of the earth.....

It seems that giving thanks.. For interracial cooperation.. Is not viewed as something good.. A little tint of despair in your words.. Time is flowing.. Seasons will pass.. Again spring will sprout.. Great write Gershon..

Despair?! Me?! Sure, from time to time. Not totally, but one can get down these days, what with all the craziness!! ~ gw

G'day Gershon … humanity has gone bloody mad. It's like the universe's lunatic asylum. There doesn't appear to be any solution just yet, but something will give - thanks Gershon - Lindsay

Never fear, Lindsay. We're replacing 'Columbus Day' with 'Indigenous People's Day' next October. ~ Bite my Tongue!
