Is It Safe

After many years,
I think
I'm safe now

To paraphrase,
I think I'm safe,
therefore I am,
yet am I?

I ask myself,
is being safe
knowing that
there's nothing
to fear?

Or is it
simply
knowing
what you fear?

There's always
something to
fear, so it can't
be that there's
nothing

And knowing
your fear
is not nothing,
but it's not
the same as
being safe

Maybe,
being safe
is knowing
that you've stood in
the cold dark shadow
of your fear
and yet,
you still
stand

And yet,
I ask my safe self,
if I stand again
in the cold of
that dark shadow,
would I still be?

Safe?
