Is it a Myth? - an etymology of amethyst

Is amethyst a purple myth,
or just a rock, 
some silicon quartz:
violet tetrahedra?

Is it really a-methusdos,
not drunken, 
sane?

Perhaps royal regalia,
rare and kingly -
yet, common in Brazil?

Rock on, amethyst!
Imagine cracking a geode
and all that glittery stuff inside.
