Invisible Friends

You sit on one side, I sit on the other
Between us a screen and many miles
We know each others thoughts
Yet have never seen each others smiles

Connected only by our words
Nothing more, nothing less
We share our thoughts and lives
With some, we open our hearts and confess

We will never know each others faces
Unlikely, we will ever meet
We have become invisible friends
Yet never knowing ….if we passed by each other in the street!

The poem works beautifully as a reflection on virtual friendship. Its understated tone makes it feel authentic, like a personal confession.

Isn't it something? I wrote about it, too, "Small Boxed Faces." It's the way of the world now and I think all poets will feel it/write about it eventually. I have a Soup friend that I spend phone time with, tell all, but you're right, I'll probably never see her smile. I love Connie Marcum Wong, who died while I was 'away. The least we can do is appoint someone to contact the other when one is laid up or gone to heaven. I need that much. You can tell this touched me?? Poetry hugs ... CayCay

A heartfelt and poignant piece, Deb—your poem beautifully captures the intimacy and mystery of connections made at a distance. The idea of “invisible friends” resonates deeply, highlighting the power of shared words over physical presence.

Hmm....We never know whose paths we cross. a friend of mine became friends with a person from Sweden, she never met her in person. One day while walking through the streets of Manhattan she recognized her by her photo. Now we are all good friends. In fact, the couple from Sweden are wonderful musicians who have written quite a few songs from my lyrics. Amazing how things happen sometimes. Lovely write, Deb. Hugs CharlieX
