Interlude - May 1987

Another personal interlude
      between
my wanting to love you
      and
my wanting you to love me.

A piece of life,
a period of time
during which I hope
you’ll come to me
      as a friend
            and
                  as a lover.

For if this interlude
      ends with only
            the loneliness
                  of my tears
                        raining down
                  while your footsteps
            echo on the ground
      growing more silent with time
as you go into the distance,
I may always remain
      in this twilight
                  between man and boy
                  between your love
                        and no love at all.
