Inner Light

My soul is trapped, unable to get free.
Under the shattered pieces of my heart.
Darkness where inner light should be.
Without the light my soul will fall apart.

How am I to fill the emptiness within?
The love once there, I have had to deny.
No hope for healing to begin
Without love or light my soul will die.

"Darkness where inner light should be. Without the light my soul will fall apart." Such potent lines in this very honest, painful poem. Being human means we all experience this one way or another. We all must climb out of the rubble of our suffering before we can love again. This is a very powerful poem, Sandra. Be well!

p.s. I ran out of room... the movie "Inside Out" cheers me up too... it's helpful to see that being present to our sadness (like the Sadness character understood more than the Joy character at first) is necessary. So perhaps your poem is like this, it's in that stage, where it needs to be. But the Joy character looks back on the memories and discovers that sadness brought comforters to her, which became an important turning point towards feeling loved. In your darkness, remember the Sun is still out there...

I thought of this song: HEALER OF MY SOUL -- and thought of you -- I'm sharing it in case there's any chance you will find it comforting... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7003fqZ8GY Desolation finds us all at times, but we're not alone even in our Lamentations. "His mercies are new every morning!" :-) There is always something to look forward to, to be grateful for, to smile/ laugh about, some way to make a difference in someone's life. This keeps me going. You hang in there, too, Sandra! :-D

Sandra, I know the pages of the story you told so well. I wonder how it ends, don't you? -Richard

I can relate to this. At a time of loss, divorce or death of a loved one the darkness envelopes the entire body and soul. Very beautifully and poignantly composed Sandra. A fave for me! Congratulations on your 3rd placement! xxoo ; )

A soul thrives on light, it is light, the bright beacon that lights our way in this dark world. Beautiful.

Beautifully written; I do agree. Without love and light, the soul will die. Maybe not totally, because I do not believe it can EVER totally die, but just a little bit by bit. This is a marvelous "thinking" poem.
