In Tribute To a Poetess
You are an idealist, you run with your heart bouncing on your sleeve.
You are fearless; you give intimate details of your life.
Your pen is ready to take on the world.
You could be sixteen, twenty-six, or sixty-two.
It is hard to guess with the likes of you.
So I decide to read more of your poems, my friend.
You give some clues that I wonder are right.
You say I was “six or eight” six years ago.
But I do not picture a twelve-year-old with your vocabulary.
So I figure this poem was written a few years ago.
You take up for Black Lives Matter, and George Floyd.
You take up for transgender and gay children.
You are an idealist. A friend to the friendless.
You are Jewish. You are confident. You are amazing.
I am going to guess that you are seventeen but I could be wrong.
You could be forty-five or eighty nine.
You have wisdom.
You have a compassion.
You have a sense of humor.
Age does not matter.
