Notes About The Poem

Many coyotes have been sighted in my neighborhood in Georgia. Simon Bull, the artist, takes many photos of wildlife around Carmel, California or thereabouts.

In This Desert Place

coyote coat blends;
he bends.
four legs under
his form; a downward arc
of a lowly pup.

layers of land -
 brown,
then white,
then beach tan,
then gravelly.

pointed ears,
triangular face -
keep a lonely pace
in this desert place.

an artist snaps
his camera
with great effect,
capturing this sole image.

the artist will catch
the fur - his brush
will make appear,
each hair release
the untamed beauty.

this approach to the wild,
beguilement less threatening,
at a distance.

We have seen many coyotes in our neck of the woods, rather, our neck of the desert shrub. Sadly the city keeps growing tearing up the natural habitat, and then they hunt for little dogs and domestic cats, which is sad and one must keep pets inside. It is sad when the natural settings for the wild creatures are overtaken. I miss the old days when they had miles and miles around here of uninterrupted free reign. I love your respect for the lone wild coyotes, to see the beauty. The pups are so cute.

we live on the edge of town...an exurb with plenty of open fields....I hear and sometimes see coyotes early in the morning.

We’ve lived here since the 90’s and for many years I didn’t know about the coyotes. We have red fox here too!

Nice appreciation of the coyote. I like spotting them here in my retirement community. Small dog owners, not so much.
