In The Rain

I stand in the rain Unready to start again The chilling breeze Brings me to my knees I light a fire but it burns out Casting me in the shadow of doubt Your smile used to light up my heart Now the memory rips it apart Ten years ago you went away As I simmer in the turmoil of that memorial today I can hear church bells ringing As new lovers are singing The clouds part bringing them sunshine As some suffer, others find joy, an act divine And as I sing the blues and look for clues I'm looking to relight the fuse But the spark is no longer there When life is agony and nothing is fair My halo was replaced with devil horns And adorning my head is a crown of thorns But it is my hopes and dreams burning at the stake So what else is left for me here Consumed by hatred and driven by fear I'm just a face replaced left forgotten and out of place Denied the divinity of God's forgiving grace Festering and forsaken I'm left alone and shaken It's all just too much for my wounded heart to take in So all alone I stand here in the rain Unwilling to start again As demons tap dance before my eyes Whispering their sweet little lies I'm a lost little lamb who lost his faith Cursed by the faintest sign of your wraith Your words are hard to make out and a little too late Because I've succumbed to my lonely fate In the rain, in the rain, my innocence was slain Leaving behind nothing but pain and a stain Because I cry when angels to deserve to die Using my dying breath to ask, "why?"
