("And Dream of Sheep". 2018, original encaustic)
In The Morning
In the morning
As I start to go about the day
I’m reminded of little things
From the night before.
There in my dreams
Whole worlds exist
Parallel and populated
By the contents of my mind.
And it’s not like I need
To make the contents any more conscious
Since they remain in my mind
Fundamental building blocks of reality.
And so they exist parallel
Fleetingly glimpsed
Fondly felt
Somehow more and less real than here and now.
The difference as far as I can see
Is the whole dream world exists only as a now
While my waking world
Gives me relationships that are build in time.
And these relationships
Be they of people, place or thing
Are what make life rewarding
Held in place by our consciousness.
While meanwhile in the dream
Our unconscious mind continues
To churn and create, digest and dissolve
All the building blocks of reality.
In the morning as I go about the day
There are things to do
Which the veil of consciousness keeps in focus
By keeping the dream at bay.
