Notes About The Poem

For Silent One’s
Deviants and Divine contest
08/02/2026

In sight but out there

After five days of irony,
life was looking bleak
That fourth night seemed long,
much more than a week
I seen geckos licking eyeballs,
shovel-faced lizards swapping feet
trying to cool off
in the searing desert heat

A nomad walked by,
talking to a mirage
He could’ve been praying
and the mirage was a façade.
From my point of view,
his journey was damned
walking in circles
around the promised land

I came here fracking
for my missing soul,
and then it came gushing
as liquid black gold
Looking up astonished,
a genie appeared
saying, “Thank you, master,
I’ve been down there for years”

“Be careful what you wish for,
I’d like to give you one”
She was a sexy genie
and very good with a pun
I asked for a Time Machine,
knowing well she’d fail
but I did get one off her,
time stood still on any scale

Back in the real world,
things are calming down
I joined a death metal band
from some unmarked town
They liked my catchy riffs,
deviant lyrics and poems
We’re called (many names),
mine’s out there on its own

*      *      *     *     *     *

Now before falling asleep,
it’s impossible to be dead
Living brings the nightmare
that nothing lies ahead
Still, my fear of being shunned
beats off the ugly stares,
in a world full of friends
playing musical chairs.

I had a bruising day today Miss Laurentine, but you have helped balance it out with the good news of my contest placements, thanks again for being the harbinger of good news, cheers David

To me this reads like a psychedelic journey through despair disguised as comedy. The poem refuses conventional seriousness, using grotesque imagery, puns, surrealism, and black humour to confront some very serious questions like Who am I? Where do I belong? What happens when the things I desire don't save me? And is loneliness more frightening than death? Congratulations on your placement.

Thanks S1, I’m delighted with your placement, yes I was using absurdities galore in this piece, so many questions in life make very little or no sense to me, even conventional seriousness can seem a little lame and lack real answers, I preferred the abstract and pun approach to tackle such issues in your contest, which was a joy to write for. The truth is I do take life and death very serious, nevertheless I’m an existentialist at heart, cheers David

As I began reading, I felt like I'd just checked into Hotel California. Put to music your version could be superior (or more demented) then Henley and Frey. "Got one off her..." ha Bet ya did. Your scope of living in an unreal world may be more like reality than many can picture. Sleep won't come easy after reading or singing such lyrics. Fantastically mesmerizing, David.

High praise Lin, if only I could put music to it, like the Eagles or Paul Simon, of course I could hammer on a drum kit or play guitar in a thrash metal band lol! Hands up! I did get one off her (one wish maybe) :) I couldn’t resist adding that line in, The surreal world is a big part of my poetry, you’re right not many can picture it, and that’s fine, whatever floats your boat is the name of the game, still I’m delighted you got the essence of this piece, and found it fantastically mesmerising, cheers David

I remember reading a book about reincarnation years ago about being reincarnated into different roles with the same souls - the musical chairs seems apt for that, but given "nothing lies ahead" perhaps not! So much surreal imagery regenerating the same vibe in different guises. I wonder if there are any "stop fracking, have faith" signs in the unmarked town & if so, what do the sign makers really know? I well & truly took a trip through this excellent poem. Obvs a fave, it's right up my street!

Ha! don’t take that (nothing lies ahead) line as gospel especially coming from me, it’s more about existential thoughts we cannot see past, the concept of reincarnation has been around for millennia, and all I can say is my dog that died very recently was a good soul with a different role, 🥲! I think the surreal imagery brings a sense of disorientation but like you said keeps the same vibe going, until I joined the death metal band in the middle of nowhere:) I can’t play instruments, neither can they, so we may have to try some trash metal, you certainly did take a trip through this one, and I am guessing you enjoyed, especially after leaving a great comment and fave in you wake, thanks so much Laurentine, cheers David

descriptive imagery in your first half of the poem ~ I dont remember reading in a poem about a gecko licking eyeballs! That’s definitely a very creative opening, to waken up the readers little bit! I am half asleep and that woke me up and now I can’t unsee the gecko! I am surprised we both used musical chairs today. I have actually never ever used it before in a poem! 😱 this is clever! Do you have a fave death metal band? I love metal bands ~ Didnt understand the prompt before this. BOL. fav! Sending you light 💫 please ignore my typos etc. im almost asleep lol

Hey there Ink, I’ve never used musical chairs in a poem either, yet here we are playing with them on the same day, I’ll take it as a sign 🪧 as I walk through the desert of weird imagery lol! That pun you mentioned is probably best left to the imagination haha! Yeah I like heavy metal, bordering on death metal, so Slipknot is probably my favourite in that genre, Duality is my favourite song by them; A lot of duality in that shunned line too! The gecko and his cousin the shovel faced lizard, 🦎 are pretty ingenious creatures when it comes to keeping themselves cool, unlike me out fracking searching for my soul 🤫 Thanks so much for commenting and faving my poem, at zero past thirty in the Maldives🏝️, I hope you get back to sleep, for a few more hours at least, cheers David

Dear David, A very thought provoking and heartfelt poem as always! You always amaze me with how you evoke many emotions of a reader through one poem, or write! And I read this out loud, I must say your rhymes give a brilliant cadence. The pun joke, I kind of understand it in a very different way, which I dare not say here in comments ~ just to be on the safe side! It is also my fear there youv mentioned, fear of being shunned, well we experience that in this world so well dont we? And I like the
