In Memoriam
They handed it to me
The heavy green wool jacket
Circa 1918
Found safe in an attic
In its pockets
“dogtags”
Shoe buckles
And a small bracelet
Etched…NELLIE.
He had come home
He would remember
The men that came home
He would never forget
Those that hadn’t.
As I placed it in the box
I whispered
“THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE”
