Immigrant's Son

The raw beating of an immigrant's son
made news this morn. How long will this go on?
How easy it is for leaders who scorn
the people to manipulate a town,

a city, a nation, cause them to fear
each other and the far away "other",
bringing out hate filled weapons to bear
against those not considered a brother.

Golden dreams dashed, how long will this go on?
Does hate really lie at the heart of our nature?
Is it really useless to dream upon
a better world as part of our future?

An immigrants son was beaten the other day.
My father, immigrant's son, beaten the same way.
