Sketch by Elizabeth Gondolf

inspired by Norman Rockwell's Girl at Mirror

Image in a Mirror
She sits all alone in her bedroom tonight, and stares in the mirror while dreaming her dreams; she thinks to herself in the soft evening light, and wonders why she has no friends so it seems. Perhaps it’s because of her fashion so bland, or maybe the reason, her plump podgy face; her classmates make fun with their barbs out of hand, and shun her at lunch break, it’s such a disgrace. She looks at the pictures in teen magazines; the girls look so chic in their denim and lace, and all look so svelte in their skinny blue jeans; their face looking smooth, not a hair out of place. She thinks to herself, if I just looked like them, but delicate demons play games in her head. The room is all dark now as teardrops she stems while dreaming her dreams as she climbs into bed.

I, myself and too many other girls have been there and done that... If only society didn't pay so much attention to beauty and give it such importance... This poem was beautifully written and expressed, my friend, and the sketch is lovely, too. Well done to you both!!

Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your thoughts, Kelly, it’s a shame that so many people don’t realize that true beauty comes from within the heart. All the best. Hugs, John

Masterful re-creation of the doubts and the pain endured by so many teen-aged girls generation after generation. Perfectly penned! Best wishes, Gershon

Thanks, Greg, I appreciate your thoughts. The youth of today have so much pressure placed on them by social media and their peers. I think times were much easier when I was their age. John

"She thinks to herself, if I just looked like them" You capture the emotion in this sketch my dear friend. Your daughter is very talented, and so are you. Your thoughts touch my heart. She wonderful just the way she is- the girl looking in the mirror. ~ Brandy

Elizabeth's sketch is a treasure found, John. If not for it, this poem would not exist, and more's the pity that would have been. Denim and lace are not substitutes for a good heart. Thank you for sharing your lines and those drawn by Elizabeth.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Lin. With all the pressures placed on youth people these days by social media and advertising, it is sometimes hard to convince them that beauty truly does come from within. Hugs, John

I friended such a teen at church, once upon a time. There are reasons why self-confidence is at bay. In this case she suffered from physical ailments, most assuredly anxiety attacks. But she had a beautiful soul and I was glad I reached out to her. She did lose weight over time. Well done, my dear poet friend!

A really sad verse John, children can be so cruel if one of them is in any way different. Not all parents are rich and of course those that are buy their kids designer clothes and they taunt poorer kids. Well written John. Love the artwork. Tom

Thanks, Tom, your comments are so true. I have to brag a bit, this sketch was drawn by my daughter when she was about 16. I had saved a copy and found it in an old file a couple weeks ago; I just had to put a poem with it. John
