I'M Not Just a Girl

the term China girl

reduces me
to nobody
defines me
by my skin color
singles me out
as a misfit

it strips me
of all that I am--
poet
college graduate
the “it” girl
the beauty and brains

which matters not
to you--
in your world
I’m only a girl
with no worth attached
