Notes About The Poem

Experienced 'Life Line' helpers say that "I'm Fine" often hides an untold story. Genuine listening begins by resisting the urge to fill the silence after these tiny words or toffer comfort to ally the problem. Real support is patiently offering to leave the gap unfilled. To talk and respond while respecting that people will open up only when they are ready.

Listen to poem:

I'm Fine

The laughter quivers
more than tiny words allow
while the kettle sings
I warm two cups for fresh tea—
pot clad in woolen cosy.

Need raps the door once
I leave my shoes by the door
silence enfolds hands—
my chair faces the landing
waiting till the dusk can speak.

Night keeps its starlight
behind dim, dark, unlit clouds—
until the mist lifts
and drapes open wide to show
want, waiting, help, are outside.
