I'M a Poet...Perhaps

My poems are simple
Composed of simple words
Understood by simple minds
Because I have the same kind.

I do try to read other poems
But often can’t find the rhyme
Missing the meaning somewhere
Pulling out my hair (if there was any left there).

They must be very good
Others seem to rant and rave
I wish I understood
Artistry of which I crave.

Sometimes sentences run on and on
I can’t tell where one stops and another starts
Adjectives pile up on one another
Beautiful words indeed, but my mind they simply smother.

I am a simple man
I do the best I can
I like to rhyme my words
To some it seems absurd.

I am expanding my mind
Replying to others in kind
Enjoying many, I will admit
Others, half-way done I quit.

I think I’m out of my league
I thank you for humoring me
It’s a passion I cannot leave
I’m a poet – or, so I believe.

This has very astute observations. I often feel just like you when I am reading poetry online. I am simple but I still like to use big words when I can, however, I sure hope my meaning is always plain (like you have done with THIS poem). The poems that use bad grammar running on and on, I do not like those. I want to see some kind of "artistry" involved! Loved when you mentioned that. LUv, andrea

Same here as well. It seems to me that a lot of people fancy up their poems with a bunch of huge words or make it so abstract that I can't follow or seem to lack the rhythm I see in rhyme. I get kind of discouraged when I don't understand and I see that a lot of others do but I suppose it's just a matter of taste. Great poem.

How true!! Sometimes I miss the point of poems as well. In those cases, I can't comment. I must be a "simple" lady, because I enjoy rhyme and find little pleasure in having the meaning of poetry obscured with complex styles, especially those sentences that "run on and on." I like your style, Joe. This one touches a chord for me and goes to my favorites. Love, Carolyn
