If you had wished to come

If you had wished to come—
You would have turned again.
But no footstep crossed the door
To make me glad again.
Perhaps the past was past to you,
Perhaps you needed space;
Or some more lovely companion
Had filled my vacant place.

If you had wished to come—
You would have turned again.
Perhaps you tried to remember me 
Perhaps you tried to flee;
Perhaps the love you seemed to play
Was never meant for me.
And I, a little credulous,
Believed the heart was true.
