IF WE LOOKED

If we looked
With our hearts
Not just our eyes
We would see the world shrink.

Shrink to a point
No longer round
But an oval
Like an egg ready to hatch.

Nations draw lines
Build walls around what’s theirs
Guarding borders
Turning away from the rest.

But Mali and Niger
Have looked with their hearts.
Let us follow them
Maybe they will show us the way.
