If Trees Could Cry

A mighty tree rose from the ground;
Its trunk was thick and brown.
Its limbs held high like many arms;
Its leaves like a green crown.

Although not bound to live too long
All life must pay the cost.
There came a storm, a gale did blow,
And half of it was lost.

No longer whole, it could not stand
With half now torn away.
If trees could cry this one would weep,
For now, it could not stay.

Then came a man with saw and chain
To cut it to the ground.
Logs of fire wood put in neat stacks;
The rest to shredder bound.

You hooked me with "trees" in the title. I've had to say goodbye to some old native trees in the last 5-6 years, and it's tough - they're like family members (almost!). Nice poem.
