If Only I Looked Up
If only I looked up to see the lines on your face
I would have seen that they led to the fear in your heart
Surely, I would have persuaded you from embarking
On this expedition you are yet to return from
If only I looked into your eyes when you called me
I would have felt the trepidation within your soul
Indeed, I would have calmed your nerves repeating your words:
It is well with us! It is Well!! It is well with us!!!
Though an age has passed with over five thousand sunsets
Time has not mended this wound I carry in my soul
My mind and heart are engulfed in a brutal battle
One seeks closure, the other an unfinished story
My eyes have grown dim and dye cannot hide my grey hairs
If I were to contemplate the silver cord is free
Where do I erect a stone and what words do I etch?
The Muse is yet to craft the words for your epitaph
Your memory is like a cedar by the river
If the Owner of time were to allow me grace
I would return to that Tuesday and behold your face
I would embrace you like you cuddled me as a child
