If Not Human, I Would Be a Tree

If I'm not a human, and if I'm born a tree
I would be the deity of silence,
broken only by a kindred whisper
and at times a slow, swirling, hand-in-hand dance
that needs no feet to move.

If I'm not a human, and if I'm born a tree
I would measure time not in hours but in seasons..
sunrise to sunset, leafing out and leafing in.
Yet I may be bored of standing erect so long,
longing to sit.. if only for the twinkling of an eye.

If I'm not a human, and if I'm born a tree
Rain would be my music, birds my fleeting guests,
flowers my happiness, and fruits my gratitude.
I would shade the mighty sun
and challenge him in a quiet duel..
protecting all who seek refuge beneath me
with every green blade I bear.

If I'm not a human, and if I'm born a tree
I would linger in this world far longer than usual,
spreading only virtue to all who dally near.
I would witness all the lives that pass
and mourn with a pool of memories.
And though it is a lonely life,
I would still be happy..
living in a gentler rhythm,
for I may not be as busy, cruel, or shallow as a human..
And in my rooted silence, I may discover the life human often forget to live.

The roots of your tree run deep, Jenish, and above ground, the branches advertise their depth
