If I Was There

I would have looked her in the eye
Daring her to make you cry
I’d stand before you like a wall
I’d take each blow as they would fall
Shrieking screams and calling names
I’d mute from you will falling rain
I’d wipe off the pepper she rubbed on your thumb
I’d stop her before she pounded it numb
I’d rescue you from that god awful place
I’d take you to safety and spit in her face
Nestle you in a safe little nest
I’d hold you and love you
Because you are the best
