If I Had Broken My Heart

If I had broke my heart
My words would have shattered
Into pieces of fractured feeling.
The truth is I’m too selfish
To give you a part of my soul
I want myself for me,
Sweet Darling,
So even as I hold you closer
Than I hold my own tears
Your arms only embrace my shell
My hopes, joys, fears have flown
Far away, to a place no human can touch.
The harder you reach
The further I’ll retreat
Even though you stole my heart
Once in the depths of night
It was never yours to take.
