If I Could Have Held You

If I could have held you
 lay waste to these tricky words
instead of a tearful smile
it would have been more honest;

Lay waste to these tricky words,
there would be no way to top that;
It would have been more honest;
The silence is all that makes sense;

There would be no way to top that;
instead of a tearful smile
the silence is all that makes sense,
if I could have held you.
