I Wish I Had a Tougher Heart
Often I wish I had a tougher heart
One built like a hardened missile site.
A heart impervious to passion’s piercing;
Armored steel and Kevlar strong.
A vaulted core where not grief or pain
Nor, sorrow could find entry
Not this tender, worthless, lump of flesh
Which tears and rips and shreds and scars,
Yet, goes on hoping.
There’d be no sadness, soreness or trepidation
In my heart of adamant and, I’d never feel like crying.
But I know. If it were constructed so ,
My battered heart would never have loved
And its every beat would be in vain.
