I Want To Tell You

I am writing this to you 
You, whose friends and family have written off 
You, who have you yourself, written off 
I want to tell you 
You were not born this way 
With hair trigger rage 
With crippling anxiety 
Or just not feeling normal in any way 
Written off by society 
Or a DSM casualty 
It was that fall down the stairs when you were three
Or at age six, falling out of a tree 
You were not born this way
You have a traumatic brain injury

John Watt Date: 12/3/2021 4:39:00 PM My wife had a TBI as a baby when her mom turned away from the grocery cart for a split second and a sister jumped on the cart overturning it and baby landed on her head. Life has been certainly different ever since, with brain signals getting crossed, dietary complications arising, sleep patterns disrupted, and family relationships affected. Only later in life has she been able to connect the dots between them all and her accident. So encouraged to see you tackling this subject. I had my lights knocked out so bad I spent 23yrs in the dark, only figured it out after the 4th TBI… then I could map my decline. And do something about it <3 xomo!

The prisons, shelters and the streets are full of people with brain injuries, and so many psychiatric diagnosis, as my guru Dr Daniel Amen says, “traumatic brain injuries ruin people’s lives”. When my daughter was 3, a thunderclap woke her up in the middle of the night. She crept into our bedroom and stood next to me for several minutes before gently lifting up one eyelid and whispering into my eye, "Papa, are you in there?"
