I Shall Write of Bygone Days

I shall write of bygone days
Old memories, old-fashioned times
Of strange and primitive ways,
Simple tunes and easy rhymes.
When poems were read out loud
To entertain family and friends,
Prayers were said with heads bowed
To each his own business attends.
While life flowed steadily onward
And chaotic noises were eschewed,
At all costs everyone avoided discord
And dinnertime was a day reviewed.

I love this the best "Simple tunes and easy rhymes." - I am all about this!

It was a "simpler" time...when you waited for Dad to finish reading the paper before you hunted for the "funnies" and "sports".

So true, John. We dared not "mess with" the morning paper until my dad had looked through it, and he wouldn't let us have the "funnies" until he was through with the whole thing. Yes, indeed.

Your poem induces an ache in my heart for those kind of days, Milt. So poignantly penned, friend. Here's to steadfast, firm, loyal, dependable, and comfy-cozy. :) gw

I felt that way when I was writing it, gw. I'm with you all the way!

I remember these days fondly "Simple tunes and easy rhymes. When poems were read out loud" - why did we let this lapse?

I don't know, Caren. And it seems since it did, we cannot recover it.

Wonderful poem. But I like a little discord. I enjoy being with people who I may not share their views but they can make their case with intelligence. Nothing better than a lively give and take but my wife disagrees. When I'm with her family we talk about the weather way too much. So boring. Have a great day my friend.

You, too, David. I must admit that I really do enjoy a lively conversation with some give and take.

Thanks Milt, memories invoked blissfully, are like precious diamonds, and this recollection wears their sparkle. Made me reminisce. Love it!...ab
