I Said She Said
She said, “We shouldn't”. I said, “We should”.
She said, “We couldn't”. I said, “We could”.
She said, “We oughtn't”. I said “We ought”.
She said, “What happens if we get caught?”
I said, “Let's do it”. She said, “Let's not”.
I said, “It's nothing”. She said, “That's rot”.
I said, “You'll like it”. She said, “I don't buy it”.
I said, “How will you know if you don't try it?”
She said, “Well – maybe”. I said, “That's great”.
She said, “Let's get started”. I said, “No – wait”.
She said, “You're scared”. I said, “No - not really”.
She said, “A minute ago you were all touchy-feely”.
I said, “Perhaps you're right”. She said, “No I'm not”.
I said, “Let's just cool it”. She said, “God I'm so hot”.
I said, “Look at the time”. She said, “Jeez - what a fuss”.
I said, “If I don't go now I'll miss my last bus”.
She said, “What's the matter?” I said, “I feel ill”.
She said, “Will you call me?” I said, “Course I will”.
She said, “How about tomorrow?” I said, “If I'm better”.
She said, “If you can't phone then write me a letter”.
I said, “Goodnight – then”. She said, “Cheerio”.
I turned on my heel and started to go.
My stomach turned cartwheels, I felt really mean.
God - life's a b###h when you're only fourteen.
