I Need Pain To Write

I promised I wouldn't answer, but I did
I'm not sure if i'm in love with you, or if I'm in love with this
Because pain and heartbreak gives me a reason to write
But i'm praying angels will come and stop me bleeding at night

Love is a funny thing, sometimes we can't control our own heart
We can pretend we don't care, but sooner or later we feel that scar
We drink to forget, but it makes us think more
Instead of going to bed, we choose to drink more

Now we're crying over pictures we should rip up
Why do we always value someone more, once we split up?
Pick up a phone to text them, but the alcohol scripts us
So we make no sense, and pretend it was just a mix up

Every relationship that went wrong, has made me write better
So I'll write a great poem about you, if we spend a night together
But it'll be even better if you take the time to break my heart
Is it bad that I need pain to make my art?

I love poetry but I don't know what to make of this
This isn't even based off a recent relationship
It's just something I figured out about myself
I need pain to produce poetry, I can't do it without help

I promised I wouldn't answer, but I did
I'm not sure if i'm in love with you, or if I'm in love with this
Because pain and heartbreak gives me a reason to write
But i'm praying angels will come and stop me bleeding at night
