Notes About The Poem

5/2/2026 for Obsession Poetry Contest sponsored by Seth Pina

I Must Know

I always wanted most of all to know,
but why this fierce passion I cannot say.
Other children might want to jump or throw,

and while they wished to laugh and run and play,
I read the books written through the ages -
to gain knowledge to keep danger away.

Yes, knowledge is power, said the sages,
but o'er safety and power, there is love,
and abandoning life in the pages,

and driven by a force, seemed from above,
I was drawn to a sweet flower in bloom,
but not showing what I was thinking of,

I tried in vain to possess and consume
by knowing all about her that I could
and so I lost the scent of her perfume.

An irony I wish I understood -
fifty years on, I don't know who I am.
My memory's not working like it should.

In fact, I do not even know my name.
I struggle in confusion and in shame.

Great job here. Both the form and the message. I am failing miserably trying to get on this sponsor's lists! I think you have been doing well if I recall correctly. I really like what you say in this poem . Congrats on the win

This is inspiring me to write my own terza rima! You've done a great job. I am particularly drawn to the line "abandoning life in the pages". Does this mean not living by the book?

Thanks, Terry! Yep, I tried a few of these terza rima's lately and kind of like them. I think I meant something like that, maybe something like instead of living a life of seeking knowledge through books, experiencing life more directly.

seems like the older I get the less I know and I'm evolving and truly don't recognize myself anymore. yikes.

This is a beautiful poem, but the ending sends cold chills straight through my heart. Memory loss as we age is really a tragedy. Great poem!

David my memory is going too, I dread the thought of being on my own, with no one to watch over me. A great write… Beryl

Thanks, Beryl. It's scary to think about. I think I'm just experiencing "normal" age related forgetfulness, not as bad as this poem.
