Notes About The Poem

Month of the Child Poetry Contest

7/22/24

Sponsored by Trina Layne

I Miss Yesterday

It happens quickly,
the chubby arms of a child
clinging to my neck one day,
and too soon those arms are around someone else
The busy early days of motherhood
fade into the days of the empty nest
The days and weeks rush by
until I hardly recognize the person in the mirror
Life’s purpose changes as the seasons pass,
yet, the days are rich with love
I am blessed, yet sometimes I miss yesterday,
when I was young and my kids were small
I miss the days of sticky kisses
and tackle hugs and problems to solve
that ended with grateful affection,
the days of long ago
However, each day is a gift
so, I will hold on to the important things
as the days rush by
at the speed of life

Kathleen, this made me smile so much. Adults grow alongside their children; then the children become adults, and the cycle repeats. All of it goes by so quickly. Congratulations on your placement!

Dear kathleen, this is exactly how i feel and what i was missing when i put the contest up. I miss my sons childhood and those cuddles and more like youv mentioned too here: time just flies and it happens so quickly without us knowing … life is as such. I love especially the lines “ Life’s purpose changes as the seasons pass, yet, the days are rich with love I am blessed, yet sometimes I miss yesterday,” i can resonate with every word there! Soul hitting! A fave it is! Congratulations
