I Met My Neighbors Today
I met my neighbors today in a most unintended way
Yes I had seen them in passing and given the usual perfunctory hello and how are you , not waiting to hear their reply
Then Irma blew into my island town and huffed and puffed and crushed my home into the rain drenched ground.
My family and friends stayed huddled and bunkered down as the furies swarmed around
Then in the gray dawn of morning light what surrounded us was a catastrophic site but we were all here and alive .
As I wandered out what was left of our house door I gazed up the road and there I for the first time saw my neighbors .
Without hesitation and without contemplation I rushed to greet them one by one.
We hugged and embraced everyone from far and near. we gave thanks and shed our tears. And in in our own hearts gave thanks that we were still here.
Yes I met my neighbors today
