I Memorize You
My daughter,
In the ways your hands are always busy
Creating something from nothing
And turning everything into a game or a story
In the ways your mind moves faster than your body
Like there’s too much fire inside you
To stay quiet for long
My son,
In the ways you crash into the world
Fearless and loud
Dinosaurs in one hand and snacks in the other
Always in wait for the next adventure
In the ways you don’t slow down
Unless sleep catches you first
I memorize you for all that you are
As if things are changing fast
Because I know they are
I love you most in the small ways
Still leaving room for another kind of love
The kind that looks forward to versions grown up
I wonder who you’ll be
What you’ll create
What you’ll pour yourself into
What kind of world you’ll build
With those busy, brilliant minds
And where your courage will take you
What you’ll chase
What you’ll stand tall in
When you’re no longer small
And one day
You won’t reach for me first
You won’t yell for mom at every corner
Or expect me to clean up your messes
And the thought of that hurts just as much as it excites me
Because I don’t just love who you are now
I love who you’re becoming
