I love you

I love you

Dear one I write you tonight

From a faraway land to say I love you

And I miss you more than words can say

Somewhere in the darkness I hear guns being fired

And I know someone is dying alone

In a muddy field

I wonder if tomorrow

Will be my day to die

Late at night when I can’t sleep

I dream of home

Mother’s garden and your angel smile

My father waits to play checkers

And I can smell the turkey cooking in the kitchen

Darling, I want to be home

With those who love me

Not in a strange land

Filled with ghosts

These words are all I can give you

Please try to understand them

Promise me that if I am lost

In this war I never wanted to fight

You will find me

I want to lie beneath our lilac tree

Hear the birds singing

Feel the breeze whisper in the grass

I love you
