I Let It Slip Away
I let it slip away . . .
a beautiful beautiful day.
I’d looked out my window and seen
blue sky and grass so green.
Then back in bed I lay
as I slept the morning away.
At last I awoke but I had
my chores! I felt so bad.
Why in bed did I stay
and not go outside just to play?
By the time my chores were all done,
much dimmer was the sun.
Oh, why did I delay
enjoying this best day of May?
With joy I could have been biking
or on a trail hiking.
Wild flowers in array
I could have plucked for a bouquet.
In a cool stream I could have splashed
or through a meadow dashed.
No, it is not okay.
the glory of May to betray.
Procrastinating is my sin.
Sun could have kissed my skin.
With contriteness I say
I let a great day slip away.

*Happy May Day everyone! This poem is an experiment with a new rhyming form I created. It consists of couplets with alternating syllable counts of 6/8 and 8/6. The 6/8 couplets are monorhymes.
