Notes About The Poem

 

 

I heard today

I heard today that you took your own life
it crushed me to hear this
it brought me back to my son's attempt
to take his life that was so very close to 
being successful

I can still remember sitting on the floor
in his icu room just watching him breathe 
and being thankful that he still could

I hate that so many people 
feel that way and do not see any 
other options

I get that life is hard
but life can be beautiful as well
I wish I could help you see the beauty
but that can only be discovered by oneself

My hope is that you found peace
I wish that you could have gotten help
to prevent this

My tears are useless now
but please know that there are those
that do care that you are gone

Oliver Mckeithan March 19, 2025 at 1:00 PM Powerful poem Kathleen. Suicide is perhaps the hardest death to understand. There are no easy answers for someone who feels that they have reached the end. It is hard to understand and it is frustrating that the mental healthcare system seems so inadequate sometimes.
