Notes About The Poem

I Hear a Melody

From the distance I hear a melody,
Or is it just an echo of rain falling?
Or perhaps I'm trapped inside the melody
And hear your voice once again softly calling
Me to stay with you in the love light falling
Like the notes of the melody recalling ...
No, it's just the echo of raindrops falling
Outside our chamber where once the melody
Played with thunder beating from our hearts rhythm~
Now alone I hear it softly calling,
Falling into silence and echoing
Into dreams I had long ago forgotten.

What is this melody I keep hearing?
Why do I tremble to hear it playing?
Surely it is just an echo falling,
Perhaps just rain softly, simply falling~
No need to fear dark shadows creeping, falling
Like a curtain drawing, shutting out our song.

'Tis a haunting image to be trapped inside a melody. I like how various words are dotted throughout the poem in rhyme, with particular repetition of the suffix "-ing". How much of this is crucial to be faithful to the form, and how much is you being extra creative? Whatever the answer to that question, you have used the form to create a reading experience that flows and doesn't feel forced into a form. The ending feels brutal, but certainly well-written. I particularly like in this the word play you have going on with "song", because a canzone is considered to be a song, stopped at the same time as the poem.

Thank you. As I recall I was being faithful to the form. The repetition of end words and the rhyme was a bit difficult.
