I Have Spent Time Near Death

I have spent time near death.
Not a pleasant experience.
Watching life struggle
with its dilemma.
To leave its host
or linger in a painful
goodbye.

I have carried the corpse
of death’s unexpected presence
past the sallow faces
of the unprepared.
Looked into the pleading eyes
of siblings grasping
for a reason.

I have seen death
walking in the lonely alleys
unable to understand
why it still lived
in a realm where dying
is a game played
by those who want to cheat death.

This is so intriguing, John. i really like how you faced this challenge. just yesterday we had to have our beloved dog put down. I lay on the floor next to him looking into his eyes as they finally closed, succumbing to death. How quickly it comes and we feel such a hole in our hearts when even a beloved pet dies.
