I Had a Dream

I HAD A DREAM

I had a dream ‘twas not
Of pleasures countless got
Or caverns measureless to man
And trying to garner all I can

It was a world of equals where none
Went hungry and work was done
For purpose and not for gain
And people’s efforts were not in vain

Where each man counted true
And not just the select few
Each one had a voice well-heard
By leaders who heeded every word

But I woke to find my vision false
Every person has his faults
Pleasure domes are for the realist
Pipe dreams are for the idealist

Note:

My thanks are due to Coleridge for his excellent
poem Kubla Khan, from which some phrases have been taken

This is my dream too, Syd. Guess I'm an idealist, but I can't let go of hope we will live to see world peace. God bless you for sharing this inspirational poem. Coleridge has long been one of my favorite writers. Read the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner as a child and was totally absorbed. Later discovered Kubla Khan. Beautifully written, my friend. Peace and love, Carolyn
