I Get Lost Somewhere in the Middle

I Get Lost Somewhere in the Middle

I get lost somewhere in the middle between sleep and open eyes,
I drift far from my own life like a cloud with no direction,
what I like, what I don't, what I once wanted have all melted into empty words,
and life has become something that passes simply like water between stones.

Even if I had opened the umbrella I was meant to get soaked to the bone,
just as you, even if you had stayed, were still destined to leave without a word,
I looked up at the sky that day like a man begging for a miracle,
but no one from above came down to stop the rain between us.

There was another kind of rain I was hiding beneath heavy eyelids,
the one from inside that rose on its own toward my eyes without asking permission,
I could have turned around to look at you one last time face to face,
but I was afraid — what if you were still there and I couldn't bring myself to leave.

In that kind of rain you can't see anything clearly, not faces,
not intentions, not those moments that once felt real,
you only feel the cold dampness like a finger writing on your skin,
and the cold that settles into you slowly like an unwanted guest.

The truth is that day it wasn't actually raining water from the sky,
it was your leaving dressed up as rain to make it seem more bearable,
and I was standing there in the middle of that gray and frozen day,
learning for the first time in my life how a person drowns on dry land.
