As you may have guessed, yes this is what today you would call a trilogy. However this is another rare form of poetry called "Progressive massage a trois" This form is attributed to the Marquis de Sade a French aristocrat who was a philosopher, a writer, poet, revolutionary, who wrote under his name and others. He was known also for his libertine sexual views.
The form is 3 poems, that progress from one concept to the next all with a common theme, for example, short/medium/long or nature/science/life or witty/serious/contemplative and so on. The idea is you take a small idea and progress it in the direction you wish. Although no one knows if it was the Marquis de Sade, it is attributed to him more because it was a used form during his time, now weather he used this form under his own name or another, I leave that up to you and history!
