I Did Not Exist Before I Met You
You ask me if I’ve ever loved another,
I tell you I have not and I speak true.
For how could I, when love of you defines me?
Preceding that, lived one you never knew.
…
I did not exist before I met you.
Not the me you know and love in kind.
You who’ve shaped and nurtured and so changed me,
That who I am and love of you are twined.
…
The person I called I back then, was different,
A state to which I never can return.
The me that did not know you, was a stranger,
And who they loved is none of your concern.
