I Carved the Moon
In the Luna night I sit beneath moonlight,
knees pressed to dust that has never known rain.
I gather moon soil from its silent skin
and sculpt my beloved with nothing but love.
His eyes twin galaxies, godlike and Greek,
enchanted, mysterious, spilling moonlight into my chest.
His lips, red as dusk catching fire,
a smile that dances even on a blue moon.
In his left arm, pride a golden sword,
the king who rules the quiet kingdom of my heart.
In his right, a jasmine, white and burning,
love and devotion folded into a single breath.
His crown rises high, his forehead wide as sky.
I dreamed of kissing it once with a trembling smile.
I carved each tiny line until the years wore me thin,
until my hair turned white as winter.
I wait beneath the full moon’s silver lantern,
begging the deep sleep to break.
Night after night I open my veins,
and feed my blood to the stone like rain to a seed,
so one day he might wake.
At last a crack. A breath.
The hard shell splits from head to toe.
He stands, alive, before me.
My sacrifice blooms into reward.
With skeleton hands I reach for the face I made,
my last wish trembling on my lips.
But his moon-face turns away.
He kneels to another figure at his side
a woman of earth and stone, my sister in silence.
He gives her the jasmine from his hand.
To give her life, he takes the heart I bled into him,
lifts it on his golden sword,
and sets it inside her chest.
I die at his feet, smiling through grief,
a soft lantern in the dark.
I carved the Moon.
But Earth was always the one he loved.
