I Believe In Unicorns

Now don't think me mad
Or one of those crazy chicks
Because I believe that Unicorns
Really did exist
Don't roll your eyes
Or make that face
Just humour me
And I will make my case
You see I was one of "those"
A horse crazed girl
And for my grade six science fair
The Horse
Its history I did unfurl
From the dog sized Eocene Eohippus
Family lines that include the Tapir
To lineage linked to the Rhinoceros
I ask
Can you assert without fear
That an equine beast with a single horn
In the forest did not disappear
As the rhino's horn is made of hair
It is possible no fossils would be found
So on my faith that The Unicorn
Did exist (and might still)
I firmly stand my ground.

I agree that this is a charming tale. However, I did find one line a bit clunky to the modern ear: Its history I did unfurl Perhaps consider something like: I gave this new idea a whirl ...

I am fascinated how poems are received, I don't know why this is one of top poems, perhaps the title is a curiosity. Not one of my best in my opinion. That line is "a bit clunky to the modern ear", but that's why I love it, humour me, a scholastic feel to it ~ a school science fair project. ;) Thank you for checking out my page Michael! xomo

I believing in believing too. Take our fantasy and hope away and we fall in the abyss. Well penned expository on the passion all poets must have to believe. Believe in something. Congratulations.

This is not the only world or reality, it's just the one most are trapped in, so Unicorns are alive and well. Congrats on your win, and thanks for supporting my contest.

So do I! Just because you can't see it does not mean it does not exist. Well written, makes sense.

Your argument is well grounded. One of my favourites; I read the book too. I have a dvd of the film so whenever I need a dose of believing I watch it. I believe in dragons too.

Well Maureen, I did catch Chameleon in Tanzania (while in the Peace Corps in 64-66) that was over a foot and a half long that had a large single tusk on its nose. You would have liked him I bet as he could change many colors, from bright green to mottled brown with black specks. Also he turned black with bright yellow patches if he was upset. I didn't try to ride him though! :-) Want to speculate on the evolutionary advantage of a horn?

*giggle* chameleons are fantastic creatures! So many uses for a horn, I couldn't begin to speculate! ;) Thanks for the visit!

This one is very well stitched together with style and humor, brought together by your poetic soul. Unicorns are the embodiment of magic in its most wondrous form. What's not to believe?Emile. #7

You make a really good case for this. The last time I was in the Museum of Natural History in NY, they had set up the floor as a platogram. I think we should break in one night and add unicorns!!
