I Am Hoping For An Emergency Today

I am hoping for a little emergency today, just sitting here, willing it to happen.
Why?
Because I was told that today since the principal is gone, I am in charge of emergencies.
I am rarely in charge of anything besides just trying to control myself, as that is usually more than enough.
Am I in charge of sore throats?
No. The nurse can do that.
Am I in charge of blood?
No.
Am I in charge of weaponry of any kind?
We do not allow that here.
What if a dragon comes up to the school and blows fire into the heating system?
Yes, you can be in charge of that.
I sit, motionless, waiting for his footsteps.
Sh! I think I hear something.
False alarm, just kids running in the hall.
The boss has been at some boring meeting all morning, and absolutely nothing exciting is happening here. For some odd reason, the children have this inane sense when she is gone to save all emergencies for her return.
It is 12:15 and I have to leave for a meeting.
The principal is driving up as I leave.
We wave.
I know full well there will be emergencies now.
If I hear on the news there was a dragon I am really going to be mad.

"For some odd reason, the children have this inane sense when she is gone to save all emergencies for her return." (The kids know who the "grown-ups" are)!! This reminded me of the time my (fully grown) best friend said something about taking her niece to Disneyland- but instead of excitement, the little girl looked startled and said "But- who will take care of us?" Bwahahaha! They have our number...
