I Am Here Alone

Had I not stopped
to help the fallen rise
to whisper in a crowd
I am here, alone.

Perhaps I would have caught that bus
reclaimed the voice of passion
defied the cadence of that “distant drummer”
fled not into the valley of failures folly.

And yet I stand erect
untamed by calloused hands
proudly patched and mended
dirt covered and sun tinted.

Proud, yes proud, to don this uniform
present myself, report for duty
for I was never broken.

I have absorbed life’s lessons.
It’s pain, passion, and joy
Still stop…
                  To help the fallen rise
                  To whisper in a crowd
                                                         …I am here, alone.

An affecting, sticky poem, I mean sticks to ya. I can’t say why, but this piece brings to mind a quote from Alex Colville that has never left me, in reference to his work deployed as an artist in the war, “I, and only I, am experiencing this”. Great piece, powerful. xomo
