I Am Gone

I Am Gone
I am gone,
not like smoke disappearing into the sky,
 but like a song
left playing in an empty room.
My laughter still hangs
in the corners of old memories,
 but nobody notices
 how quiet I’ve become.
I walk through days
like a ghost wearing my own face,
 smiling when I’m supposed to,
speaking when silence would tell the truth.
The mirrors know it most.
 They see the fading —
 the tired eyes,
the heart stitched together with invisible thread.
I am gone
in the way sunsets leave the ocean,
 slowly, beautifully,
 without anyone realizing
 the light is almost over.
And maybe one day
someone will search for the version of me
that used to bloom so brightly,
 only to find
 I left pieces of myself
in every place I tried to belong.
