I Am An Explorer

I find myself alone in the country
For the first time ever, I can hear my soul
My thoughts are not prancing or on fire
I am alive to do nothing
Unhurried and joyful

Early morning nudges me to take a walk
I smile at the weathered barn with three eyes
surrounded by a rustic coral and skinny barbed wire
the silence is rejuvenating
I am hopeful and excited

Soundlessness of this solitude surrounds my soul
I adore the overgrown grasses, spying dandelions at my feet
are those violets?
Yes as well as tiny bits of mushrooms and wild strawberries.
I am an explorer, alone in the country
For the first time ever happy with my soul.

I wish I could share your enthusiasm for the morning, but I just can't. I sleep until mid-morning. If I don't I don't feel right. I'm a definite night person, crawling into bed between 1-1:30 am. But, of course, the dandelions and violets are still there when I venture out by noon!

Oh, BION, I remember those hot afternoons in the classroom, when we didn't have air-conditioning (60s) and I would get so sleepy in the afternoons. It was hard to get the children to function when they were so sleepy, too. A classroom of yawners I had.....

I like all kinds of times to be awake, but sometimes really want to sleep at 3:30 in the afternoon which is unfortunate because I do not get off work until 4:35 and I have a 40 minute drive home.
